Our Provider Network

The Blue Cross NC PPO3 network of health care providers includes 96% of medical doctors and 99% of all general acute-care hospitals4 in North Carolina. When outside the state, our members have BlueCard® coverage with doctors and hospitals in all 50 states.

Community Involvement

Blue Cross NC employees work hard not only for our customers, but for the communities where they work and live. In 2019, Blue Cross NC employees contributed more than $1.4 million through our annual employee giving campaign. With matching contributions from the company, a total of nearly $2.4 million was invested in our communities.5

Our employees are deeply connected to the communities we serve.

Since 2011, our employees have donated $6.9 million to charitable causes, and have shared their time and talents with a number of community organizations. Our employees have volunteered more than 116,000 hours at a value of more than $2.3 million.6  They help construct KaBOOM! playgrounds alongside parent volunteers, package hundreds of thousands of meals in the annual Sort-a-Rama hunger relief effort, and give their time to a range of other causes, including Backpack Buddies, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, Special Olympics and the Senior Games.

Establishing, and continuing to support, the independent Blue Cross NC Foundation is another outlet for deepening our connections with our neighbors across North Carolina.

Founded in 2000, the Blue Cross NC Foundation has invested more than $143 million in organizations and communities across the state in support of its mission to improve the health and well-being of everyone in North Carolina. Specifically, the Foundation is focused on:

  • Continuing a long-time commitment to improving access to healthy, local food
  • Continuing work to address oral health through innovations that increase access and improve outcomes
  • Continuing support of community-centered health approaches and strengthening multi-sector partnerships to address long-standing inequities
  • Fostering a new level of focus on early childhood development

We're a Fully Taxed Company

Blue Cross NC was founded as a nonprofit Medical and Hospital Services Corporation. Although we are structured as a nonprofit (no shareholders) corporation, the company is fully taxed and in 2019 incurred $431.0 million in federal, state and local taxes.7 Blue Cross NC has not been tax exempt since 1973 (State) and 1986 (Federal) and it is not a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

Because we don't have shareholders, our net income is invested back into the company into things such as health programs for our members, customer service improvements and technology. It also contributes to our reserves, which represent the safety net for our customers in the event of an economic downturn or public health emergency.
