Gerald Petkau is the Senior Vice President of Commercial Markets. In this role, he leads work in the Commercial markets across individual under 65, group fully insured and ASO, the state health plan, and specialty products. Previously, he served as COO from April 2016 through December 2020, and CFO from April 2009 through April 2016. From September 2019 through May 2020 Petkau also served as Interim CEO. Petkau joined Blue Cross NC in 2004, as Vice President of Corporate Actuarial and later assumed the roles of Vice President of Financial Services and Chief Corporate Actuary prior to becoming CFO.
Prior to joining the Company, Petkau worked from 1992 - 2004 with The Canada Life Assurance Company, where he served in a variety of roles in three different countries, including Vice President, Group Insurance in the US, a role which included responsibility for both financial performance and operations, Vice President, Corporate Actuarial and Vice President, Acquisitions in Canada, interim CFO in the UK and finally as CFO of the US Division. Earlier in his career, he filled a variety of actuarial roles with Travelers and Great-West Life.
Petkau currently serves on the board of Alliance Medical Ministry and has been an active volunteer at Crosspointe Church in Cary. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He is also an Illinois Registered CPA. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics.
