Members Pay Less with In-Network Labs

Blue Cross NC members get a discounted rate for out-of-network covered lab services, just like they do for labs in-network. But, members may pay more to use an out-of-network lab instead of an in-network one. It all depends on the member's health plan.

Here's an example:

Type of Cost In-Network Lab In-Network Hospital Lab Out-of-Network Lab
Lab Test $30 $60 $200
Member Pays $6 $12 $100

Members and their doctors should choose in-network labs, whether they're free-standing labs or based in an in-network hospital. It offers the best value with health plan benefits when lab work is done in network.

Save Money on Lab Work

Ask your doctor to use an in-network lab if your lab sample is done in the doctor's office.

If your doctor is sending you to a lab for a test, ask to be sent to an in-network lab.

How to Find an In-Network Lab

Your doctor may not know which lab can save you the most money on your lab work. Before your next doctor's visit, find out for yourself and share the information with your doctor during your visit.

  • Find in-network labs by following these steps in our Find a Doctor tool: Individuals, Families & Groups => Select a Plan Type => Find a Doctor or Facility => Search for Independent Laboratory

  • If you're a Blue Cross NC member, give us a call at the phone number listed on your member ID card. We can help you find an in-network lab in your area.

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina online provider directory is developed using information from network providers, facilities and other third parties. Blue Cross NC does its best to post the most accurate, up-to-date information. However, because providers are continually added to our network and providers occasionally decided to discontinue their participation, we cannot guarantee the accuracy or currency of our information at the time of your search.
