The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation is a private, charitable foundation established as an independent entity by Blue Cross NC in 2000. To help further the Foundation's work, Blue Cross NC invests in the Foundation on a regular basis, just as we do other nonprofit organizations across the state.

Community Partnerships

The Foundation’s vision is that North Carolina is one of the healthiest states in the nation within a generation, where everyone has the opportunity to be as healthy as possible. It provides resources to support community organizations to carry out their missions, to address drivers of health and to improve health outcomes for the people they serve. The Foundation recognizes the expertise within local communities, and works in partnership with these organizations to determine what the Foundation can do to help.

Working Toward Racial Equity

Recently, the Foundation strengthened its organization-wide commitment to racial equity and work to be a more equitable grant maker. Its goal is that by 2024, at least 60% of its grant funding will prioritize racial equity, and by 2026, at least 60% of its grant funding will support people of color-led entities. The Foundation understands the importance of transparency and has developed tracking methods to assess and report on its progress toward these goals.

Short-Term and Long-Term Work

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation pivoted resources to meeting communities’ and organizations’ immediate needs while progressing on its longer-term objectives within its focus areas of early childhood, healthy communities, healthy food and oral health.

Since its establishment, the organization has invested $178 million into North Carolina communities through more than 1,200 grants, collaborations and special initiatives.1 In 2021, the Foundation invested $15 million through more than 75 grants.2
