Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) is on a journey to better health care for all North Carolinians. Follow along to learn about our goals, see our progress and stay informed of what's next. We won't stop until health care is better for all.

At Blue Cross NC, we are One Team. Everyone here makes an invaluable contribution to our purpose. We strive for a culture that equips and empowers every employee to feel fulfilled, grow in their career and give their very best for our customers and communities. Throughout the pandemic, we’ve continued to deliver for our employees. We’re excited to continue building on that foundation as we pivot to the workforce of the future.

Among the many awards we consistently receive, our company has been Great Place to Work (GPTW) certified every year since 2016.1 While we are proud of this, we never stop finding new ways to give our employees an even better experience with us. Today's employees want to be inspired by their leaders, feel free to express their authentic selves, have the space to grow and develop, understand their company's big-picture work and take pride in their contributions to their company's purpose. Our employees' guides our efforts to improve.

Fortifying Our Leadership

In response to 2021 GPTW survey feedback that employees want more from their leaders, we expanded on our Fearless Leadership program. Leaders throughout the organization meet quarterly to learn and share ways to spark and sustain meaningful conversations, build good working relationships and cultivate a strong culture.

Nearly 40% of all Blue Cross NC leaders have attended these virtual voluntary sessions.2 Our leaders are focusing on improving communication: Fostering open employee forums and clarifying each of their employees’ contributions to the company’s strategic direction. Our monthly Talks with Tunde and more frequent Coffee and Conversation series allow small groups of employees to get to know our CEO and other executives on a personal level and get a behind-the-scenes look at how they make important decisions.

Connecting With Our Communities

Our generous employees seek to contribute their time, resources and skills to improve our communities. We at Blue Cross NC find creative ways to channel our employees’ skills, zeal and dedication to maximize our impact on our communities.

When the pandemic pushed us to adapt our volunteerism so employees could participate remotely, we discovered that making volunteerism virtual can lead to higher participation and greater impact. For example, we have expanded Pro Bono Day – a longstanding tradition where employees use their professional skills to help nonprofits realize their missions – to three offerings: The one-day program, Speed Consulting and a 12-week long-term program.

Every fall, through our GivingWorks campaign, we match employees’ donations to nonprofits; in 2021, this generated $2.1 million for more than 1,400 organizations.3 For 2022, we launched Dollars for Doers, where we double the impact of employee volunteerism outside of Blue Cross NC by giving $10 per hour volunteered to a nonprofit of their choice. We continue to expand the ways that employees can give to the organizations that share our goal of improving our communities. GivingWorks and volunteering with Blue Cross NC enable our employees to strengthen their connection to our company’s purpose, giving them another perspective on the real people whose lives are improved through their daily work.

Celebration and Camaraderie

Each year, Spirit Week is an exuberant celebration of our people. Pre-pandemic, Spirit Week was full of in-person events. In 2021, we built this tradition anew to galvanize our virtual workforce. We devised novel ways for a dispersed staff to build camaraderie and revitalize their sense of community with Blue Cross NC. Spirit Week is just one of many aspects of our culture that we’re strengthening for a virtual-first future.
