OUR PEOPLE:
Workforce of the Future

State of Blue Cross NC > Our People > Workforce of the Future

The workforce of the future is adaptable. Since early 2020, we have seen how our employees flourish when they can choose where they work. We are keeping a virtual-first mindset as we move forward.

We will allow each person to decide whether to work in the office, fully remotely or a hybrid of these, and ensure that every aspect of our company’s thriving culture will be accessible to those working remotely. This means optimizing our company-wide quarterly Town Hall meetings, all team and department meetings, events and traditions like Spirit Week, employee volunteerism and more for virtual participation.

Taking Charge of Career Mobility

We empower our people to determine and achieve their own visions for success. Our new Talent Review process enables employees to initiate and drive the conversations about where they are in their career.

Through Talent Review, employees announce when they feel ready for a promotion or want to pivot to a different role or department. Having this process in place gives each employee agency and a voice in their own career mobility, rather than waiting for leaders to take this initiative on their behalf. In its first year, about 80% of employees completed this process.1

We encourage employees to adopt a continuous learning mindset. We have increased our digital learning capabilities and offerings to empower our employees to build new skills and stay abreast of innovation in their fields.

Safeguarding Employee Well-Being

Amid the pandemic’s impact, we see that working people typically don’t receive enough support for their mental health. We began offering paid well-being days to all of our employees in 2022, in addition to their paid time off, holidays, family leave and COVID-19 leave.

These days are intended as personal resets to help employees protect their mental health. For well-being days and other organizational norms for a flexible workforce, Blue Cross NC executives lead by example. Learn more about how our redesigned working model centers employee choice.
